Historical atlas

LandLapse

Explore how history takes place.

What it is

LandLapse is an interactive historical atlas in French. Explore dated maps of territories and societies, browse documentary profiles and compare available reference outlines. Coverage is selective, and the mapped borders have not all been independently verified.

Genesis

LandLapse began as a local atlas for exploring historical geography through dated snapshots. Its world map, timeline and source-linked profiles bring those observations into one interface.

Why it exists

A dated map offers a way into history. LandLapse connects places, periods and documentary sources while making gaps, approximate outlines and differences between sources visible.

What you can do

  • Navigate dated historical maps, a 2019 snapshot and a contemporary reference map
  • Zoom, pan and filter territories by region or name
  • Browse historical profiles and Seshat documentary records with their sources
  • Overlay available reference outlines and examine differences between datasets
  • Share a view with its date, region and selected entry
